With all the baby bunnies finding new homes and Summer in full swing it was time to make some adjustments to the rabbitry. My 8 kennel rabbit hutch is on its way to completion and all of the adult rabbits have been shaved down for the heat. To decrease the temperatures in the rabbitry I purchased and installed two shade sails. The sails were difficult to tension just right, well worth the hassle, however. The rabbits seem to be much less stressed by the midday heat with more shade available to them in their kennels. I think I might just add a few more for the goats and patio area down the road.
In the last two weeks, I have said goodbye to 14 of the fluffy babies and am only looking for homes for about a couple more beautiful babies. Their fiber just makes me giggle as it is so crimpy and will be a lovely addition to any spinners home or maybe they will just find a forever home here, who knows!
The largest of all the rabbit hutches has been a thorn in my side but I think I am finally wrapping it up. I just need to order some manure pans for the top level and finish the walls and roof. Maybe in my “spare time” I will finally get it wrapped up and the tenants moved in.
The design is very similar to the last two rabbit mansions I constructed but this one will have two levels similar to the original Canadian rabbit breeders hutches I mimicked my blueprints from. His were rabbit castles though and mine will always pale in comparison. With the hardware cloth in place, I was able to work on the nest boxes for the top row as I ran out of OSB for the second row… I need to plan better or my supply runs, obviously. Luckily a friend is giving me enough to complete the project this weekend! Woohoo!
My head is spinning a little as the honey harvest is right around the corner but luckily I took off July from Farmer’s markets in preparation for the side hustle. Please pray for me that I am able to finish this hutch before then!
You’re so awesome! I don’t believe I’ve truly read through anything like that before. So nice to discover someone with a few unique thoughts on this subject. Seriously.. thanks for starting this up. This site is one thing that is needed on the web, someone with a bit of originality!
